Watching a Samourai Wallet

Different ways to watch the public keys from your Samourai Wallet depending on your use case

Which public keys should you add?

If you want to track a Samourai Wallet which is actively being used online (as a hot wallet), you will want to track a different set of public keys than if you are using Samourai Wallet in offline mode (as a cold storage solution / signing application).

Track a Samourai Wallet being used online

From your Samourai Wallet settings menu, you only need add the five following public keys to a single Collection in Sentinel:

  1. Show BIP44 XPUB
    • When adding this public key to Sentinel, select addresses starting with "1" (BIP44)
  1. Show Segwit YPUB
  2. Show Segwit ZPUB
  3. Show Whirlpool pre-mix ZPUB
  4. Show Whirlpool post-mix ZPUB
ℹ️
In Sentinel it is not possible to track any bitcoin which has been received directly to your PayNym. This is because in order to detect these incoming payments your wallet's private keys are required to derive your PayNym receive addresses. Sentinel remains a watch-only wallet where only public keys are tracked. For verifying incoming payments directly to your PayNym, use Samourai Wallet.

Track a Samourai Wallet being used offline

If you want to track a Samourai Wallet which is being used in offline mode, as a cold storage signing application not connected to the internet, the public keys you track will be determined by your personal setup. See our suggestions below...

Spending to an offline Samourai Wallet

To have the ability to only generate receive addresses so you can spend to cold storage, we recommend you only track the following public key in Sentinel:

  • Show Segwit ZPUB

This will allow you to generate Native Segwit receive addresses which start with bc1q...

If you have no intention in the short to medium term to spend any bitcoin received to your cold storage in this setup, you may like to consider secure erasing your Samourai Wallet. Before doing so, ensure you check and backup your 12 Secret Words + BIP39 Passphrase so you can safely recover your bitcoin wallet in the long term for later spending.

In the future you have two options should you wish to spend bitcoin from this offline Samourai Wallet setup:

  1. Keep your Samourai Wallet offline: Spend by generating PSBTs in Sentinel, sign them with an offline Samourai Wallet, then broadcast to the Bitcoin network using Sentinel.
  2. Bring your Samourai Wallet online: Mix any bitcoin which was previously received to your wallet when it was offline, then spend at will using Samourai Wallet's postmix spending tools.

Mixing to an offline Samourai Wallet

If you are using the advanced Whirlpool mix-to external zPUB feature where bitcoin is automatically received to an offline Samourai Wallet after a predefined number of remixes, track the following public key to keep an eye on your cold storage postmix balance:

  • Show Whirlpool post-mix ZPUB

Bitcoin which is mixed-to addresses generated by this public key will remain in cold storage.

  2. Bring your Samourai Wallet online: Bitcoin which has been previously mixed-to this public key type is eligible for continued free remixing, and you may now spend at will using Samourai Wallet's postmix spending tools.
